Meet the Founder
Angelic Smith
Soldier • Gold Star Spouse • Founder of Shining Light Legacy
Some people carry their grief like a weight. I have learned to carry mine like a light and to use it to guide others forward.
I am a Soldier and a Gold Star spouse learning what it means to rebuild a life I never planned, while creating the kind of community I once searched for.
After loss, I faced the isolation, loss of identity, and uncertainty that so many surviving spouses experience. I continued to serve in uniform and care for my family, but inside I was searching for a place where I didn’t have to pretend to be okay.
That journey changed everything.
Through therapy, community, and the decision to feel and not outrun my grief, I discovered a truth that now defines this mission: healing is not the end of our story but growth is.
Becoming the mother my three sons needed in the midst of grief is what pushed me to become the leader I once needed. It is also what gave me the courage to build something that would outlive my own healing, a space where surviving spouses are seen, supported, and empowered to live forward.
I began serving as a hospice companion for veterans, sitting beside them in their final chapters and witnessing the power of being heard without judgment. I was later selected to serve on the Army’s Survivors Advisory Working Group as both a Gold Star spouse and the only active-duty Soldier, advocating for the future of families who will one day walk this road.
At the same time, I committed to earning my master’s in leadership and management to build programs that are structured, sustainable, and capable of serving families for generations.
Shining Light Legacy was born from this transformation.
Raised in a family of service and continuing that legacy in uniform today, I lead this mission with resilience, empathy, and a deep commitment to honoring the lives and stories that shape us.
To the surviving spouse… "you belong here.
To those who support this mission… you are helping carry this light forward.
This is more than my story.
It is a living legacy.
The Legacy Behind the Mission
CW2 Keith Smith
Soldier • Husband • Father • Friend
His life was a quiet example of service, creativity, and a love that continues to shape everything this mission stands for.
Keith served more than two decades in the United States Army, including two combat deployments to Afghanistan, dedicating his career to supporting the people and missions around him. He was the kind of leader who believed that the best way to make an impact was to help others succeed. Whether at work or at home, he was always learning, always building, and always leaving every place better than he found it.
He had a creative mind and a natural gift for teaching. He loved taking an idea, his own or someone else’s and bringing it to life, not for recognition, but for the joy of seeing what was possible. He walked beside people as they grew, encouraging them, mentoring them, and showing them that they were capable of more than they imagined.
His big smile and contagious laugh could change the entire atmosphere of a room. He made people feel at ease, valued, and safe, not because he tried to, but because that was simply who he was.
At home, he was a devoted and loving father who believed deeply that his children could be more and do more than he ever had. He poured his time, his patience, and his whole heart into helping them become exactly that.
To me, he was everything, my friend, my husband, my children’s father, my battle buddy, and the person I trusted with every idea and every dream. He made the future feel certain.
Shining Light Legacy exists because of the way he lived.
The community being built here reflects the way he cared for people. The creativity behind every program echoes the way he brought ideas to life. The commitment to ensuring no one walks alone mirrors the way he showed up for everyone around him.
His legacy is not only remembered,
it is lived forward in every life this mission touches.
